About the Festival


1. What is SustFest21?

Answer:  SustFest21 is the St Albans District Sustainability Festival 2021. The festival is made up of a programme of 100+ events put on by community businesses and organisations between 23rd May and 6th June 2021.

2. What geographical area does the festival cover?

Answer:  The festival covers the St Albans District *across St Albans, Harpenden and the villages*. It is not a “one location” festival but consists of a programme of over 100 events put on across the district by a huge variety of businesses and community groups during the two weeks.

4. What sort of events and activities does the programme contain?

10 principlesAnswer: Groups  and businesses run all sorts of innovative and interesting activities during the festival.   All events must fit with the 10 themes of sustainability from the Bioregional rainbow list illustrated on the left.

Many fabulous events have been registered including building a whale sculpture out of discarded plastic…hearing Jonathan Porritt talk….fashion swap shops…..a scavenger hunt….an upcycling workshop for teenagers and walks, talks, films, nature hunts and much more.


5. Are there any events open to the general public?

Answer:  Yes, most events are open to the general public. All those will be listed in the programme with dates and times are public. There are also many private events, open to members only e.g. schools events, some businesses, some faith groups etc. These will be listed as such in the programme with no detail of time or location.


6. How much does it cost to go to an event?

Answer:  The price of an event will be listed beside it when the programme is published in May. A large majority of the events submitted to the Festival programme are free.


7. Do I need to book to go to an event?

Answer:  The booking details of an event will be listed in the programme. However, many of the events do not need booking.


8. Is it too late to organise an event?

Answer:  It’s never too late to join in with SustFest21. Registration to be in the pdf programme is until 5th April.  Please visit our Take Part  page for more information.


9. What is the Market Takeover – is it the same as the Sustainability Festival?

Answer: The Market Takeover was a one-day event in St Albans in 2019 as part of SustFest19. Due to Covid, this year we will be holding Sustainable Markets with stalls filling central St Albans. However, it will not be called the Market Takeover. Please see our Sustainable Markets page for more information.


10. Who organises the festival?

Answer: Sustainability Festival is organised by a partnership between  Sustainable St Albans (formerly Transition St Albans) and St Albans Friends of the Earth.  We seek funding from various sources, including The National Lottery, local grants, local business sponsors and advertisers in the programme.
